People usually use January as a time to make a “New Year’s Resolution”,but any time is a good time to set a new goal. The trick is to setting goals that will last. The most common resolution people set is to lose weight or get healthy. According to the University of Scranton, only 8% of the people who set New Year’s resolutions succeed in attaining them. Most people fail in achieving their goals because they do not stick to the new habits for long enough. Here are some tips that will help you keep your new goals this year:
Set Small Goals
To help you reach your New Year’s weight loss goals, set small goals for the entire year instead of setting a major life changing goal. Small goals will make your resolution attainable. For example, you can set a goal of losing 10 pounds each month instead of setting one of losing 120 pounds.
Make Goals You Can Keep
In addition, make resolutions that you can keep. For instance, you can decide to exercise three times a week instead of stating that you will go to the gym every day.
Focus On One Thing At A Time
Another tip to help you keep your New Year’s resolutions is to set goals that change one behavior at a time. Therefore, do not set resolutions to lose 120 pounds and stop smoking. Focus on changing one habit at a time.
Seek Professional Help
Seeking professional help is another thing that can help you achieve your weight loss goals. This can include consulting a nutritionist to help you design a delicious and healthy diet that you can stick with in your quest to lose weight. If you have been breaking your resolutions despite really wanting to lose weight, consulting a psychologist can help you understand any underlying emotional issues.
Join A Support Group
Joining a support group can also help you attain your New Year’s resolutions. These can be local weight loss groups where you can share your challenges with others who are trying to attain similar goals. They can also be online forums which are perfect for those who work long, odd hours.
Don’t Give Up
Last and certainly not least, deciding not to give up on your goal is paramount in ensuring that you eventually attain it. Therefore if you break your resolution of eating healthily so that you can lose weight by binging on chocolate after a stressful day, do not give up on your goal. Take time to understand why you went off course and put measures in place to make sure you stay on track with your goals for the rest of the year.
