A list was published by  www.nationalnutritionmonth.org that describes books and websites that provide timely and scientifically-based nutrition information you can trust for parents and children. The publications listed below are perfect for children and teens. Since March is National Nutrition Month and Reading Month we thought what a great way to combine the two.

  1. “Eat Your Vegetables” and Other Mistakes Parents Make: Redefining How to Raise Healthy Eatersby Natalie Digate Muth, MD, MPH, RD; with recipes by Mary Saph Tanaka, MD, MS. Healthy Learning, 2012.

Have you been trying to persuade your child to eat more nutritious foods? Are you using dessert as a reward? Learn some new strategies, including how to make physical fitness more enjoyable.

  1. Food Fights, 2nd Edition by Laura A. Jana, MD, FAAP; and Jennifer Shu, MD, FAAP. American Academy of Pediatrics, 2012.

Children are not always good eaters. Here are some solutions to whining, dealing with the influence of friends and choosing when to make an issue of eating. This revised second edition also includes healthy breakfasts and snacks, as well as phone apps.

  1. Fueling the Teen Machine, 2nd Edition by Ellen Shanley, MBA, RD, CD-N; and Colleen Thompson, MS, RD. Bull Publishing, 2011.

Written for teens and addressed to them, this book covers calories and weight management, vegetarian diets, eating disorders, exercise and much more.

  1. How to Teach Nutrition to Kids, 4th Edition by Connie Liakos Evers, MS, RD. 24 Carrot Press, 2012.

This new edition features even more creative ideas for parents and teachers who want to encourage children to select foods that are good for them. Hundreds of activities aimed at children ages six to 12, including MyPlate.

  1. Nutrition: What Every Parent Needs to Know, 2nd Edition by William H. Dietz, MD, PhD, FAAP and Loraine Stern, MD, FAAP, Editors. American Academy of Pediatrics, 2012.

Parents face the challenge of providing good nutrition for their children, while sometimes encountering eating disorders and allergies. Learn how to address those issues, as well as picky eaters, obesity, physical activity and indulgent grandparents.

  1. The Teen Eating Manifesto: The Ten Essential Steps to Losing Weight, Looking Great and Getting Healthy by Lisa Stollman, MA, RD, CDE, CDN. Nirvana Press, 2012.

Whether living at school or at home, teens will find practical information on menus, physical fitness, sample meals and more. Also covered are food labels, fiber, junk food and mindful eating.
