By now we should all know that one of the best ways to successfully bounce back from knee replacement surgery is through exercise. Once you make a decision to have knee replacement surgery and undergo the procedure, it’s like giving yourself a second chance at a new way of life. All of those activities, like walking, that used to be painful will no longer be an issue once you have completely recovered from surgery. Within a matter of days after total knee replacement surgery, your orthopedic surgeon and physical therapist will have you up and performing about 20-30 minutes of low-impact exercises a day to help increase blood circulation to your legs and feet, prevent the risk of blood clots, strengthen your muscles, and improve movement of the replaced knee.
Some low-impact exercises you can do on your own to help aid in your recovery include:
WALKING
It’s one of the best exercises known to build knee strength. It will also get your heart rate going and help burn calories.
SWIMMING
Swimming is an excellent form of exercise. It’s non weight-bearing so you don’t have to worry about any stress on your artificial knee.
YOGA
Yoga is also an excellent exercise known to improve flexibility through various stretching techniques. Talk to your instructor before you begin so that she is aware of your limitations.
DOUBLES TENNIS
Doubles tennis, unlike singles, requires less movement so you will put less stress on your knee. Remember during recovery to keep it low impact and avoid any running.
WEIGHT LIFTING
Done correctly with moderate weights, it will increase your strength and get rid of knee pain. Your bones will also grow and strengthen with resistance training.
CALISTHENICS
Calisthenics relies on simple, rhythmical movements to build strength and increase flexibility. They include crunches, push-ups, and lunges that can be done in your home without the use of exercise equipment.
Other low impact exercises good for knee replacement recovery include golf, rowing, cycling, elliptical machines, bowling, and dancing. In order to prevent a set back or worse always check with your doctor before you engage in any sport or activity, and do not overexert yourself during your recovery. You should also listen to your physical therapist because he/she is trained to help you.
