Physical exercise is very important to your health and the benefits of walking is an easy way to increase your physical health. It is very easy to do and to fit into your schedule is walking. Physical activity is good for people at any age and makes a difference in overall health and well being.
According to the American Heart Association, the benefits of walking and moderate physical activity (regardless of age) for at least 30 minutes a day can help you:
- Reduce the risk of coronary heart disease
- Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
- Improve blood lipid profile
- Maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity
- Enhance mental well being
- It can reduce the risk of osteoporosis
- Also reduce the risk of breast and colon cancer
- Walking can reduce the risk of non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes
Before you start walking there are a couple of things that you should take care of and certain things to keep in mind:
- Check with your doctor if you have a medical condition or if you have had a recent injury.
- Invest in good walking shoes. Shoes should fit you properly and be of good quality. According to MedicineNet.com, “Shoes should fit when you try them on without any areas of pinching or pressure that could cause blisters or calluses. Wear the type of socks you’ll wear when walking when you purchase your shoes, and remember that you’ll likely need a larger-sized shoe than you normally wear if you plan to wear thick socks. Shoes should have good arch support and a slightly elevated heel with stiff material to support the heel when walking and prevent wobbling.”
- Always warm up by walking at a slow or normal walking pace for five minutes.
- Pay attention to your heart rate and breathing.
- Use good walking posture.
- Carry water.
- Wear a hat with a brim and apply sunscreen.
Walking is a great activity, as it doesn’t cost anything and does not require any special equipment or training. Just 30 minutes every day can reduce excess body fat, risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and cancers.
