Knee and hip surgery are major operations since they involve the largest joints in the body. The US National Library of Medicine states that preparation for recovery after operations on these joints should begin before the operation. This can be installing a bathroom or portable commode on the ground floor of the home. The bed, which should have a firm mattress, should also be brought to the ground floor. Stocking up on food and toiletries is another thing that can be done to prepare the home for the recovery process.
Sutter Health states that during the hospital stay, persons who have had knee and hip surgery should faithfully do the suggested activities to prevent blood clots from forming in their leg veins. Recommended exercises should also be done according to the instructions of the physiotherapist to ensure that the joints heal well and their muscles are strengthened. The doctor and nurses should also be informed if the prescribed pain medications are not working effectively or if they are causing unbearable side effects.
The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons recommends that once patients are discharged home after knee and hip operations, they should keep the surgical wounds clean and change the dressings according to the instructions of the hospital nurse. The doctor should be immediately informed if the wound becomes red or it begins to drain since this could be a sign of infection. The operated leg should be kept elevated and compression stockings worn since they improve the circulation of blood and help prevent clots, which can cause life threatening complications. Antibiotics and pain medications should also be taken as per the doctor’s prescription to facilitate the recovery process.
